ADRENAL STRESS INDEX:
The adrenal glands are two walnut size glands that sit, one on top of each kidney.
A major function of the adrenal glands is to keep the body functioning in a dynamic balance (homeostasis) in response to every kind of stress (physical, emotional, biochemical, hormonal, thermal, biological and psychological). In addition, these stress handling glands control fluid balance, contribute to blood sugar balance, inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses to injury and invasion and play an important role in immune system response. They produce steriod hormones that determine strength, energy, stamina and provide for a sense of well being in mood and emotion.
according to Dr. James Wilson, best selling author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, "Adrenal fatigue is a problem of monstrous proportions largely unrecognized by the medical establishment". Some authorities estimate that 80% or more of the population is in some state of adrenal stress or fatigue. Adrenal fatigue is common in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, automimmune disorders, asthma and other serious illnesses.
Laboratory tests are helpful to confirm the presence of adrenal fatigue, however, blood levels of circulating cortisol (an adrenal gland hormone) are so broad that they usually do not detect low adrenal function. Saliva cortisol, measured at four different times in a day, has proven reliable in detecting low adrenal function. saliva measurements of DHEA, total secretory IgA, 17-OH Progesterone and insulin are also a part of the Adrenal Stress Index panel.
Some common clinical indicators of adrenal fatigue include morning fatigue (waking up tired despite sleeping for 8 or more hours). need for caffeine beverage to feel fully awake, an afternoon low between 2-5 PM, a burst of energy after the evening meal, decreasing ability to bounce back from stress or illness, decreased focus and concentration, decreased libido and delayed recovery from an acute illness, especially respiratory disease.
Treatment is designed to provide the body with the basic building blocks of nutrition needed for healthy adrenal glands through nutrient glandular extracts, specific vitamins, minerals and herbs accompanied by lifestyle improvements.
